BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Ten provincial-level regions signed a memorandum on Monday with the Ministry of Education to improve equality in their 9-year compulsory education programs.
To date, 27 provincial-level regions out of a total of 31 on the Chinese mainland have signed the memorandum.
According to the memorandum, provincial regions are responsible for drafting a timetable for achieving total equality in compulsory education.
Provinces are also required to increase their investment in compulsory education and raise the average amount spent per student.
The Ministry of Education will boost its support for these regions by increasing funding, retrofitting rural schools with modern equipment, training more teachers and improving the safety of the regions` schools.
China`s 9-year compulsory education program typically covers 6 years of elementary school and 3 years of junior high school. Uneven resource distribution between rural and urban areas has created an "education gap" in many of the nation`s schools.
